Vigil (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.

Information We Collect

Vigil is designed with privacy as a core principle. We collect only the minimum data necessary for the app to function:

• Bluetooth Device Information: When you scan, we process Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisement data — manufacturer IDs, device names, and signal strength (RSSI). This data is processed locally on your device and is never sent to our servers.
• Location Data: With your permission, we access approximate location to display detected devices on a map. This data is processed entirely on-device. We do not store or transmit your location.
• Diagnostic Data: Basic crash and performance data collected via standard analytics tools (optional).

How We Use Your Information

• Display detected Bluetooth devices and their details
• Show approximate device locations on an interactive map
• Classify device types (phones, cameras, trackers, etc.)
• Improve app performance and fix bugs

Data Storage and Security

All device scan data is stored locally on your device. We do not operate cloud servers that collect or store your personal data. Your scan history, location data, and detected devices never leave your phone unless you explicitly export a report.

Permissions

Vigil requires the following permissions:

• Bluetooth (BLUETOOTH_SCAN / BLUETOOTH_CONNECT): Required to scan for nearby Bluetooth devices
• Location (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION): Required by Android for Bluetooth scanning on Android 10+
• Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): Required to run scanning in the background

We do not access your contacts, camera, microphone, photos, or files.

Third-Party Services

Vigil uses OpenStreetMap (via osmdroid) for map display. Maps are fetched from public tile servers and are subject to their privacy policy. No personal information is sent to these services during map rendering.

If you opt in, basic crash reporting data may be sent to standard analytics services. No personally identifiable information is included.

Children's Privacy

Vigil is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Use Vigil without providing any personal information
• Delete all locally stored scan data by clearing the app data or uninstalling
• Disable Bluetooth or location permissions at any time
• Export and delete your scan history

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
